SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA (TICKER) —The California State Athletic Commission announced Wednesday that Antonio Margarito and his chief corner man, Javier Capetillo, had their licenses temporarily suspended.
Prior to his ninth-round technical knockout loss to Shane Mosley on Saturday, Margarito was asked to have his hands rewrapped three times after Mosley’s trainer, Nazim Richardson, complained during the pre-fight inspection.
Wet pads were found in Margarito’s wraps, which were compared to a plaster-like substance, and given to Dean Lohuis of the California Boxing Commission for further study.
The substance found in the 30-year-old’s wraps is currently being analyzed by the California Department of Justice.
The suspension, which was cited as to “protect the public welfare,” will last until the CSAC has finished a full investigation.
An initial hearing on the matter is scheduled for February 10.
The former WBA welterweight champion was knocked out for the first time in his career in the loss to Mosley at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. His record stands at 37-6.
