"I am a fan of fighting. It brings a level of integrity and honesty to the game. If you want to step back and take out the instigator rule, you would see even more honesty and more players policing themselves. Guys feel more comfortable when you have somebody in the lineup who you know will fight. And, these days, the guys who are that tough, most all of them can play. Guys understand you are not going out there to kill somebody. You're going out there and doing it for the team and to make sure your teammates feel safe on the ice."
-- Edmonton Oilers defenseman Sheldon Souray
"Without fighting, there would definitely be more stick work, some more cheap shots and cheap hits. Fighting keeps people accountable -- they know there is the threat of a fight if things get too carried away."
-- Calgary Flames forward Jarome Iginla
"You can't abolish it, but I do appreciate them worrying about our safety. You can get hurt just as easy getting run over during a hit and that happens way more often than a fight. There have been sad tragic events over the last few months, but you can't jump to unnecessary conclusions either."
-- Phoenix Coyotes forward Shane Doan
"I don't think (wearing a helmet) can hurt, but the amount of times a helmet stays on in a fight are pretty slim anyway. I'm sure for some of the guys that like to fight, it could be more of a challenge. You may see more broken hands, but you never know."
-- Anaheim Ducks forward Ryan Getzlaf
"I know its part of the game and it's important for other players to have those type of guys around to protect them, but more guys are getting stronger and more physical and things are happening more often that you've never seen before. Once you started getting those injuries, you knew these things would be questioned and something could be changed. Personally, I've never been a big fan of it."
-- Dallas Stars forward Mike Modano
"Fighting just to fight is pointless. Fighting has always been part of the game and toughness and physical play has always led to fighting. Those are staples in hockey, but there has to be a time and a place for it, such as if someone runs your goalie or takes advantage of your teammates. Going out there just to fight is fighting for no reason and it's not right. I don't know if you could put in rules to enforce that."
