Nashville, TN (Sports Network) - Former Tennessee Titans and Baltimore Ravens quarterback Steve McNair was found dead Saturday. He was 36.
At a brief press conference Saturday, Nashville police department public affairs manager Don Aaron confirmed McNair's death. He said that McNair had suffered a fatal gunshot wound and was found dead inside a condominium in downtown Nashville. Aaron added that a female victim was also found, and that it was not known when the shooting occurred.
McNair, who announced his retirement from the NFL in April 2008, last played in the NFL in 2007, when he was with the Ravens. The longtime Titans quarterback spent 13 seasons in the NFL, 11 with the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans franchise.
"We are saddened and shocked to hear the news of Steve McNair's passing today," Titans owner K.S. "Bud" Adams said in a statement. "He was one of the finest players to play for our organization and one of the most beloved players by our fans. He played with unquestioned heart and leadership and led us to places that we had never reached, including our only Super Bowl. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family as they deal with his untimely passing."
A three-time Pro Bowl selection, McNair was named co-MVP of the league in 2003. In 161 games (153 starts), McNair threw for 31,304 yards on 2,733- of-4,544 passing, with 174 touchdowns. He also ran for 3,590 career yards and 37 TDs.
He was selected third overall in the 1995 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers, after he enjoyed a stellar college career at Alcorn State, winning the Walter Payton Award in 1994.
