The Atlanta Thrashers have signed unrestricted free agent forward Josh Gratton and unrestricted free agent defenseman Mike Vernace, according to Executive Vice President and General Manager Don Waddell. Per team policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.
Gratton, 26, appeared in 19 NHL games with Philadelphia last season, recording three points (one goal, two assists) and 57 penalty minutes. He also recorded five points (two goals, three assists) and 10 penalty minutes in seven games with Milwaukee of the AHL, and one goal and 46 penalty minutes in 14 games with Philadelphia (AHL).
The 6-2, 215-pound left wing has appeared in 86 NHL games over four seasons with Philadelphia and Phoenix, recording six points (three goals, three assists) and 294 penalty minutes. The Brantford, Ontario, native has also appeared in 213 career AHL games over six seasons with Cincinnati, Philadelphia, San Antonio, Hartford and Milwaukee, registering 71 points (35 goals, 36 assists) and 840 penalty minutes. He has also seen action in 31 career ECHL games with San Diego and Trenton, recording 10 points (four goals and six assists) and 239 penalty minutes.
Gratton, who originally signed with Philadelphia as a free agent on July 27, 2004, played three season of junior hockey with Sudbury, Kingston and Windsor of the Ontario Hockey League from 2000-01 to 2002-03, recording 111 points (50 goals, 61 assists) and 489 penalty minutes in 166 games.
Man, Gratton moves around a lot, but I'd be happy to land him on my team. He is a tough kid who plays and fights with a lot of heart. Personally, I liked seeing him on Philly 'cause he fit well there, but with Carcillo and Cote in the mix, he'll never see the ice. Hopefully Gratton can get some ice time for the Thrashers.
